Fitness myths, or false information, may confuse us when we are trying to learn more about improving our health!

The following are some myths that you might be wondering about!

No pain...No gain!

Exercise does not need to hurt in order to be good for you! In fact, painful exercise may actually hurt your body, rather than help it!

Lifting weights (anaerobic exercise) will cause you to "bulk-up" and gain weight. Therefore, you should only run (aerobic exercise) to lose weight.

Both lifting weights and running are good for a healthy weight. Lifting weights can increase your muscle mass, but it will cause a decrease in your fat mass too!

If you exercise, you can eat whatever you want.

It is important to eat healthy foods in addition to your exercise program! Be sure to eat 2-4 servings of fruit and 3-5 servings of vegetables a day!

You have to exercise for a long time to achieve benefits.

Any exercise will make you stronger and healthier! However, regular exercise is best:
  • 3-5 days per week
  • 20-60 minutes per time

The best way to get into shape is going to the gym.

The "best" way to get into shape is doing what works for you! Walking outside can be just as effective as working out in the gym!

If you are not going to work out hard and often, don't bother.

Any exercise is better than none!
